DEVICE MAKERS AND HOSPITALS TO BENEFIT FROM HEALTHCARE REFORM Medical device makers, hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry are expected to be among the benefactors of the healthcare reform bill recently approved by the U.S. Senate. The $871 billion, 10-year package includes a $20 billion industry tax on new medical devices (lower than the original $40 billion proposal); retention of a $155 billion, 10-year lower Medicare/Medicaid payment deal; and a continued $80 billion fund for savings/rebates that may allow pharmaceutical firms to gain customers. However, this bill will be blended with the version that the House passed in November, so some changes may occur.
