EHR USAGE BY OFFICE-BASED PHYSICIANS CLIMBS IN 2009 Preliminary estimates indicate that 43.9 percent of office-based physicians used electronic health record (EHR) systems in their office-based practices in 2009, representing an increase over the 2008 (41.5%) and 2007 (34.8%) survey numbers as tracked by the National Center for Health Statistics. The results bode well for the goal of having all Americans recorded via EHR by 2014, according to the survey. The latest National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey notes that 1 in 5 of those physicians with EHRs have systems with basic features such as clinical notes, laboratory results and prescription orders; another 6 percent of users have fully functional EHR systems that include features such as digital reminders, drug interaction alerts, and electronic order transmissions. FDA ADVANCES MEDICAL PRODUCT SAFETY TRACKING EFFORT As part of their effort to modernize medical product safety monitoring, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently awarded a $72 million contract to Wellesley, MA-based Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Inc. to develop a pilot of the FDA’s Sentinel System. The goal of the Sentinel System is to analyze information collected during the course of routine health care (including EHR systems, administrative/insurance databases and medical registries) to help find answers to important health safety questions, while still protecting the privacy and security of individuals.
