APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR $60 MILLION IN HEALTH IT GRANTS

Applications are being accepted for $60 million in health information technology grants offered by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects (SHARP) program. These grants are designed to support innovative health IT research projects that could improve health IT adoption, with key areas of interest including projects focusing on health IT security and risk mitigation, patient-centered cognitive support and clinical decision support, platforms for health data exchange and networks, and secondary use of electronic health record data for research purposes.

Applications are due Jan. 25, with awards planned to begin in March.

DEVICE MAKERS AND HOSPITALS TO BENEFIT FROM HEALTHCARE REFORM

Medical device makers, hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry are expected to be among the benefactors of the healthcare reform bill recently approved by the U.S. Senate. The $871 billion, 10-year package includes a $20 billion industry tax on new medical devices (lower than the original $40 billion proposal); retention of a $155 billion, 10-year lower Medicare/Medicaid payment deal; and a continued $80 billion fund for savings/rebates that may allow pharmaceutical firms to gain customers. However, this bill will be blended with the version that the House passed in November, so some changes may occur.
